200 years... Think about it - 200 years ago James Madison was president; a scandal erupted because he was the third consecutive Virginian elected to the high office. In 1811 (and early 1812), the New Madrid Earthquakes caused the Mississippi River flow backwards for three days creating Reelfoot Lake. In 1811, Tecumseh was defeated by William Henry Harrison at Tippecanoe. In 1811, the largest slave revolt occurred in Louisiana. In 1811, there were only 17 states; there was no Louisiana, Indiana, Ohio or Illinois. Georgia stretched all all the way to the Mississippi River thus there was no Alabama or Mississippi. Florida was under the control of Spain - for the second time. In 1811, Governor William Bount governed Tennessee from Knoxville, the state capitol in 1811. In 1811, Tennessee had a population of 261,727 and Nashville a population of 1,100. In 1811, the eight-year-old county known as Rutherford County was ready to relocate the county seat from the town of Jefferson (near present day East Fork Recreation Area) to a more central and more easily accessible location. That location was called Murfreesboro in honor of Revolutionary War veteran Col. Hardy Murfree. Please visit us often as this site changes from almost daily! Oh, and please forgive our mess - we are still 'under construction'.
